Mail Bandit Busted

On July 14, 2021, at approximately 10:00 pm, Deputy M. Hughey conducted a traffic stop in the 300 Blk of Waring Welfare Rd for multiple traffic violations. While Deputy Hughey made his approach to the violator's vehicle he noted that the vehicle matched the description given in a prior mail theft case he was investigating.
 
When contact was made with the male driver, narcotics were observed in plain view so the driver was immediately detained and placed in the back of the deputy's patrol unit. The driver gave Deputy Hughey a false I.D. but he was later able to identify him as Michael Berg of San Antonio, TX.
 
Deputy Hughey then had the female passenger step out of the vehicle, and when he attempted to identify her he was given a false I.D. She was detained and placed in the back of his patrol unit. She was later identified as Helen Oliva of San Antonio.
 
During the course of the search of the vehicle several firearms, armor-piercing ammunition, and narcotics were located. There were also multiple articles of mail located none of which belonged to Berg or Oliva.
 
Both Berg and Oliva were arrested and transported to the Kendall County Detention Center. Berg was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance PG 1 >=1G<4G, Failure to Identify Fugitive from Justice False/Fictitious Information, Tamper Fabricate Physical Evidence W/Intent to Impair, Fraud Poss/Use Credit or Debit Card =>5<10, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by A Felon, Possession of Prohibited Weapon, Theft-Mail =10<30 Addresses, Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information < 5 Items, as well as 2 probation violation warrants. Oliva was charged with Tamper Fabricate Physical Evidence W/Intent to Impair and Failure to Identify False/Fictitious Information. Both were booked and released to Detention Staff without incident.
